Dr. Darria Long Gillespie

The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), the state’s leading association dedicated to the promotion and economic advancement of Georgia’s technology industry, today announced that Captain Barrington Irving and Dr. Darria Long Gillespie will serve as keynote presenters for the 5th annual STEM Education Awards on November 4th. This conference and awards program promotes excellence in STEM Education and recognizes schools, programs, and companies who are helping to develop our future workforce.

Darria Long Gillespie, MD, MBA, FACEP, Senior Vice President, Clinical Strategy with Sharecare will serve as the lunchtime keynote presenter. As a board certified emergency physician, Dr. Long Gillespie is a frequent health expert on national TV and has appeared on CNN, CNBC, FoxNews Network, and The Dr. Oz show. In addition, she is a featured blogger on The Huffington Post for “The Busy Woman’s Guide to Health…and Sanity" and DoctorOz.com. She also oversees the development of content for Sharecare's award-winning app, AskMD, and leads Sharecare's Scientific and Medical Advisory Council.

Captain Barrington Irving

Captain Barrington Irving will serve as the dinner keynote. He has traveled to 50 countries and conducted more than 30 STEM expeditions. He successfully challenged middle school students to build a car faster than a Ferrari 430, and high schoolers to build a plane he flew on its test flight. In 2007, he set two world records—at age 23—as the youngest person and first black pilot to fly solo around the world. He has a passion to explore, inspire, and educate others. Now 32, Barrington is transforming the way students learn STEM by engaging them in problem-solving activities that enable them to overcome new challenges.

Following the luncheon keynote, there will be a series of panel discussions designed to provide the audience an opportunity for learning and networking. At the evening awards event, TAG and TAG Education Collaborative will recognize 43 schools, organizations, and companies for their achievements. Presented by sponsors and community figures, seven finalists will take home awards for excellence in the categories of Elementary School, Middle School, High School, Post-Secondary & Corporate Outreach, Extracurricular, STEM Day Activity, and STEM Certified School Outreach.
