Holiday Shopping Season Starts Early to Reach All Types of Shoppers

11/14/16

Cardlytics, an Atlanta-based purchase intelligence platform, has released its Annual Holiday Retail Insights Report. This year’s findings show: 1) Holiday spend is decreasing, 2) Black Friday sales are losing relevance, and 3) Holiday consumers are increasingly shopping online.

The results on spending show shoppers are purchasing more, but the amount of items in the basket -- and overall spend -- are down. The spending habits also showed how earlier holiday sales by big box retailers are resulting in decreased sales and decreased relevance of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The shopping trends shows four style of shoppers:

  • Early Bird- 15% of shoppers who shop the last week of October until Mid-November
  • Black Friday Warriors- 22% of shoppers who shop the third week of November through the first week of December
  • Last Minute Shoppers- 31% of shoppers who shop the second week of December through December 25
  • Consistent Shoppers- 32% of shoppers who shop the last week of October through December 25

The findings show that retailers should start their marketing campaign before Black Friday so shoppers can be reached at the time they are most likely to buy.
