Kicking off Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center (Southeastern) and the City of Atlanta partnered with The National Football League Alumni Association (NFLA) and LabCorp on Wednesday, August 30 to host a Prostate Cancer Luncheon at Atlanta City Hall for City of Atlanta employees as part of the Prostate Pep Talk campaign. Emphasizing the need for awareness and screening, the luncheon included remarks from the City of Atlanta’s Chief Operating Officer Dan Gordon, as well as Atlanta City Council member C.T. Martin. The luncheon also incorporated an educational presentation from Dr. Jeffrey Metts, Chief of Medicine at CTCA at Southeastern, as well as remarks from former University of Georgia and Atlanta Falcons quarterback D.J. Shockley, who spoke about his personal connection to cancer and the need for prevention. Those in attendance were able to sign up for free PSA screenings, which is a critical first step to combating prostate cancer. This year, the American Cancer Society estimates 161,360 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and 26,730 men will die from the disease.
