Michelin North America Acquires Streetwise Maps

9/4/17

Michelin North America has significantly expanded its portfolio of printed maps with its all-cash acquisition of assets previously owned by STREETWISE® Maps, the Company announced today.

Michelin, one of the world's oldest map and travel-guide publishers, and Streetwise Maps, the largest laminated city-map publisher in the United States, stand to become the third-largest U.S. map publisher.1

Streetwise began in 1984 by Michael Brown as a result of his world travels setting up publishing subsidiaries in challenging environments. The laminated, accordion-style fold-out maps quickly revolutionized the market. Featuring detailed and accurate designs that focused on guiding tourists around city centers, Streetwise grew to become one of the top map vendors in the country. After 30 years, founder Michael Brown and his team published more than 130 titles, including maps for more than 27 U.S. cities, 32 international cities and 11 international regions.

"In this digital age, maps are a companion to digital devices. Printed maps are the perfect planning tool, as you never have to worry about a good signal, roaming charges or finding a detour for an alternate route," said Eileen Osteen, director of sales for Michelin Travel Publications. "Maps are a foundational aspect of Michelin's travel business. With the Streetwise titles joining Michelin's collection, we are offering travelers the most comprehensive and accurate travel aids available."

Michelin will continue to publish maps under the Streetwise name. The maps will be available through Barnes and Noble, Amazon and other select retailers nationwide.

"Experienced travelers know that a physical map is a necessity," said Michael Brown of Streetwise. "Michelin, with their undisputed legacy helping travelers navigate, was the clear choice to uphold the Streetwise standard. I'm confident that as part of the Michelin family, Streetwise will continue to grow and thrive."
