Cyclists invited to “Tour de Lights,” free bike tour of festive Atlanta neighborhoods
On Thursday, Dec. 14, cyclists of all stripes are invited to deck their bikes in festive holiday lights and participate in The Mobile Social’s seventh annual “Tour de Lights.” The seven-mile bike tour will take riders on a journey through some of Atlanta’s most cheerful neighborhoods to enjoy bright lights and vibrant decorations. After the ride, participants will park their bikes at Midtown’s Colony Square and enjoy a jolly celebration including holiday-inspired fare and beverages, giveaways and more.
“This marks the seventh year of Tour de Lights, and we hope it will be the brightest, most festive bike ride yet,” said ride leader Nadine Peever. “The Mobile Social, sponsored by the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, was established to create a larger cycling community in our city through fun events like this one. This year, we are excited to partner with Colony Square, a community dedicated to promoting alternate transportation, and we can’t wait to see what the Colony Square team has planned for our riders.”
The Tour de Lights, led by The Mobile Social’s experienced ride leaders, will meet near the Charles Allen entrance of Piedmont Park and leave at 6:30 p.m. Riders from Piedmont Park will convene with additional participants at Woodruff Park and depart at 7 p.m. From the park, riders will bike along the Freedom Parkway Path to Virginia Highland, stopping at the Jimmy Carter Center for a sparkling view of the city. After the quick break, the route will proceed through Virginia Highland back to Piedmont Park and continue up 14th Street to the final destination at Colony Square.
After the tour, revelers are welcome to mix and mingle with the community at Colony Square while celebrating the most wonderful time of year. The post-ride event will feature delicious lite bites from food trucks, holiday craft cocktails from the alcohol truck Sunshine Alchemy, fire pits to keep guests warm and a merry little s’mores kit.
“The Tour de Lights is an extension of The Mobile Social’s mission to make cycling an everyday, everybody activity. Every month TMS puts on a stress-free, social ride for everyone who wants to ride, and the Tour de Lights is usually the biggest one of the year,” said Colony Square mobility concierge Kip Dunlap. “For many families, driving around looking at holiday lights displays is a tradition. The Tour de Lights is all about having that same magical experience in a more sustainable, urban way.”
Cyclists from beginner to expert levels are invited to participate in the Tour de Lights. Interested riders without bikes can use the Relay Bike Share amenity at Piedmont Park or Woodruff Park, then return them at Colony Square’s rack adjacent to the property.
In anticipation of the Tour de Lights, Colony Square launched “Oh, What Fun It Is to Ride,” a social media giveaway for a $500 gift certificate towards an electric Edison Bike. More than 800 entries have been received, so act fast and make sure to enter for a chance to win here.
Participation in Tour de Lights is free; food and beverage costs vary.
